Who is this course for?

This course is for you if you want to pass the State Exam NT2 Program I (Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I). NT2 stands for Dutch as a second language. The exam is at about B1 level. MBO (vocational) programmes at levels 3 and 4 usually ask for it, as do employers for jobs at B1 level. The school or employer sets its own requirement.

Are you going through civic integration (inburgering) via the B1 route? Then your language exams are also the State Exam NT2. Your personal plan (PIP) from the municipality states which program you take. Usually that is Program I.

The course builds on A2 level.

What you learn

You practise all four parts of the exam. The topics come from work, education and daily life, just like in the exam.

• Reading: you understand texts about work, education and society, such as an article, a letter or instructions. You also learn how to understand a text when you do not know every word.
• Listening: you follow conversations, spoken instructions, radio and video. You learn to pick out the most important information.
• Writing: you write clear emails, letters and short reports. You pay attention to the structure of your text, to word order and to your spelling.
• Speaking: you hold conversations about everyday topics and about your work. You give your opinion and explain why you think so.

So you do not only learn for the exam, but also for your work, your studies and your life in the Netherlands.

How the lessons work

You have one live lesson of one hour a week, online via video. You learn in a small group. Would you rather have lessons on your own? Then you can take private lessons instead.

Where needed, you get explanations in Farsi, Dari or English. In class you speak and write yourself, and the teacher gives you feedback.

Our advice: practise between lessons as well. The Board of Tests and Examinations (College voor Toetsen en Examens, CvTE) has a free official practice site: oefenexamensnt2.nl. There you will find separate tasks and complete practice exams.

The exam

The State Exam NT2 Program I has four parts: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking (Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven, Spreken). You can take them separately. A part you have passed stays valid. Once you have passed all four, you receive the diploma.

You do not take the exam at TaalPro, and TaalPro does not issue an official diploma itself. You register with DUO yourself and pay the exam fee yourself. Our guide to the State Exam NT2 explains how this works.

You take the exam on a computer, at an exam location. So in Speaking you talk to a computer, not to a person. In the course you learn how each part works, and you practise with tasks like those in the exam, under real exam conditions.

After this course

Do you want to go further after B1? For example because you want to study at a university of applied sciences (HBO) or a university, or because you are looking for work at a higher level? Then the B2 course is the next step. There you prepare for the State Exam NT2 Program II (Staatsexamen NT2 Programma II).
