What the exam looks like
- Everything is on a computer, in Dutch. You do not have to write.
- Speaking (30 minutes): you answer 10 questions and complete 12 sentences that you hear. A picture helps you complete each sentence.
- Two assessors listen to Speaking. For each answer they check whether it fits the question and whether it can be understood. One word can be enough, and it does not have to be perfect.
- Reading (35 minutes): short texts, each with 2 or 3 multiple-choice questions. The computer marks Reading.
- Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS) takes at most 30 minutes. All questions and answers are in the free photo book on naarnederland.nl.
- You get a mark from 1 to 10 for each part. You pass with at least a 6 for all three parts.

Is the TaalPro course suitable for a family reunification or marriage visa application?
The A1 course prepares you for the Civic Integration Examination Abroad. You usually need that exam for an MVV if you want to live with your partner in the Netherlands. You practise the parts Reading, Speaking and Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS) at level A1. You take the exam itself at a Dutch embassy or consulate, and the IND decides on the MVV. What does the Civic Integration Examination Abroad involve?
You take the Civic Integration Examination Abroad at a Dutch embassy, before applying for an MVV to live with your partner in the Netherlands. It has three parts, all at level A1: Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS), Reading and Speaking. Everything is done on a computer; there is no writing. Read more in the guide Exam abroad.
What is the difference between KNM and KNS in the exam?
They are two different exams. KNS (Knowledge of Dutch Society, exam abroad) is part of the exam at the embassy: all questions and answers are in the free photo book on naarnederland.nl. KNM (Knowledge of Dutch Society, in the Netherlands) is taken at DUO as part of civic integration: 40 questions on 8 themes such as work, housing and healthcare. In which languages can I get explanations at TaalPro?
