Who is this course for?

Do you want to live with your partner in the Netherlands? Then you usually need an MVV: a long-stay visa. For that, you first have to pass the Civic Integration Examination Abroad (Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland): the MVV exam. This course prepares you for it.

You do not need to know any Dutch yet: the course is also for complete beginners. Do you write your own language in a different script, such as Persian? Then you first learn the Latin alphabet. Do you want to learn Dutch from scratch without taking the exam? You are welcome too.

What you learn

You work on all skills, with extra attention to the three parts of the exam.

• Reading: you learn the Dutch alphabet and its sounds. Then you read simple words, sentences and short texts, such as a form or a leaflet.
• Speaking: you introduce yourself, give your personal details and answer short questions. You practise numbers, times and dates. There is plenty of attention to pronunciation.
• Listening: you understand short questions and recognise important words in a simple conversation.
• Writing: you write simple words and sentences, for example a card or a short message. The exam does not test writing, but you do need it in daily life.
• Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNS): you learn about life and the rules in the Netherlands, and about Dutch customs and manners.

This helps you manage in daily life, for example in a shop, on the street or at an appointment.

How the lessons work

The lessons are live via video, so you can also join from abroad. You have one one-hour lesson per week, in a small group. Would you rather learn on your own? Private lessons are also possible.

Explanations are in Farsi, Dari or English, so you understand everything, even if you hardly know any Dutch yet. There is plenty of attention to practical tasks you can use right away. You pay per month.

The exam

The Civic Integration Examination Abroad has three parts at level A1: Knowledge of Dutch Society (Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving), Reading and Speaking. You take it on a computer, at a Dutch embassy or consulate.

You do not take the exam at TaalPro: you register and pay with DUO yourself, via naarnederland.nl. You then make your own appointment at the embassy. TaalPro does not issue an official diploma and cannot promise that you will pass.

After this course

After A1, the next step is level A2. Once you live in the Netherlands, civic integration (inburgering) usually follows. In the A2 course you learn to hold conversations in daily life and keep working on your Dutch for civic integration.
